Meet Kishana. She’s original from St. Maarten and became Voque’s cover model after only 1/2 a year of modeling at Elite’s Model in Amsterdam. Next to her model career, she studies International Hotel Management in Holland.
On your Instagram you say:
“The depth of your struggle will determine the height of your success”
Tell me more about this?
It’s about the harder you work, the more success you will have. I believe this.
What drove you to become a model?
I always had an interested in model agency’s and my friends encourage me to go for it. I joined the Elite contest Model-look. (Check) Although there were hundreds of contesters, I was in the top 10 of their final choices, so they took me in me as their model.
Which qualities/ characteristics helped you in your career so far?
I’m really calm. I am not an aggressive or hang-up person. Quit friendly.
Being a Vogue cover model in only a year and a half after starting your modelling career is not bad, how did that happen?
They were doing a fashion shoot with different kind of models. We didn’t really know that the cover was meant to be for us. I was booked for four days but after three days I was told that was I was done with the job. So I thought maybe I did the job badly. When I was on a holiday, my agency called and told me that I was on the cover with a few other girls. I was thrilled and so happy.
Who are your role models? Who inspires you?
My mom, because she’s really a hard working person. There’s nothing she wouldn’t do or give for her children. She works hard to provide us anything we need.
Do you already travelled a lot? And what place is your favourite?
For my modeling-work I travelled to Barcelona, Cannes and Paris. I love Cannes, because of its boardwalk along the beach. For me familiar scenery like St. Maarten, so I felt at home.
Why did you choose to study International Hotel management?
Because I like working with people, to interact with people. Hotel work means always moving to do the job. I like that too. If modeling doesn’t work out for me, I can still work in hotels.
What’s your next step?
In a couple a months I’m leaving for 10 months to do an internship at the Double Tree in London. I don’t know how it will affect my career, because there’s no Elite agency in London, but I have to discus this with my agency.
What advice would you give to other starting models?
I would definitely say:
“Be confident, don’t make the world make you feel not good enough”
There are always people who wouldn’t like to work with you, but others do.
What are you grateful for in life?
I’m grateful for my family and my friends and the opportunities that came into my life so far like modeling and school.
What are you most proud of so far?
First thing on my mind, is being on the cover of Voque. And second that I’m a part of Elite Amsterdam.
What do you like about Holland and what do you like about Dutch people?
I like the experience of the changing weather. The seasons. In the Caribbean we don’t have it. I like Dutch people they are straightforward. They say what they think.
What do you like most of the people of St. Maarten?
They’re friendly. They call St. Maarten: The friendly island. They will always help if you have a problem.
What are your top 3 tips to do on St. Maarten?
1) Go to swim at the pool of the Luxury Farm at the French side and rent a cabana for a day.
2) Go to Sonesta Maho Beach Resort to go to their wonderful beach.
3) Enjoy the St. Maarten nightlife. You’ll meet most of the locals on the island in the nighttime. I like the Tantra Nightclub and can recommend everyone going there.
Which restaurant you love the most on St.Maarten?
Big Fish, a seafood restaurant. Really nice seafood they have.
What’s important for you in life?
Family and friends. But also, I think:
“Living to life’s full potential”
There are so many things life has to offer and it’s important to me that I get to experience the finer things in life. And being successful.
How would you like to see the world in the future? What can we do better as human beings?
As humans I just think we need to respect each other and accept people for who they are.
“Everyone needs to stop judging each other”
Would you like to change anything about yourself?
“As I get older, I realize there is nothing I would ever want to change about myself. Because the things I thought it were my imperfections, is what makes me who I am”
Is there anything else you like to mention?
Lastly I believe everything in life happens everything for a reason. We may not understand why at the moment, but we just need to have faith.
